When do I require a dental filling/ restoration?


A dental filling is required when a tooth is damaged from decay, trauma and wear. Not all types of decay require a dental filling. For very early stages of tooth decay where it is still superficial and the tooth is not cavitated, a filling may not be required with very close monitoring by our dentist. 


Why do I require a dental filling/ restoration? 


A dental filling is required to protect the tooth from further damage at the same time restore function and aesthetics. 


What are the different dental filling materials? 

  • Composite Resin 
  • Glass ionomer cement 
  • Amalgam 


Composite Resin and Glass ionomer cement are the most common filling materials used nowadays due to their aesthetics and being mercury-free. Though metal/ amalgam fillings are less popular now, there are still advantages of a metal filling such as durability and moisture resistance. When do I require a dental filling/ restoration?
